Returning Residents

Returning residents that have lived abroad may import their personal effects into Australia.

These effects will enter, exempt from duty, providing it has been owned and used abroad for over 12 months.

First Time Migrant

Any person arriving in Australia to take up permanent residency for the first time will receive a concession of A$400 for each adult and A$200 for each child under 18 years of age.

A family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children), for example, is allowed A$1200 worth of personal items. Effects that exceed this value will be taxed accordingly.

Effects owned and used for over 12 months overseas
will be exempt from duties.
