All motor vehicles are subject to duty and sales tax. The owner/importer must have owned and use the vehicle for at least three months prior to shipping and you must receive permission to import the vehicle before the vehicle is shipped from the port of origin.
A Vehicle Import Approval application form can be obtained from the Department of Transport and Regional Services.
Motor vehicles over 15 years old can be registered without a compliance plate.
All vehicles imported into Australia must be steam cleaned and the interior vacuumed prior to shipping. The vehicle must be spotless or steam cleaning will be ordered by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (cost incurred by the owner/importer).
The following documents are required to be submitted to the Australian Customs Service:
Original Vehicle Import Approval
Copy of Bill of Sale confirming purchase price, purchase date and whom the vehicle was purchased from (full name and address details required)
Copy of each and every page of owner/importer passport (including blank pages)
Copy of ocean Bill of Lading
Fully completed Vehicle Imported by a Passenger form (obtained from our office)
It is prohibited to bring CFC refrigerant (eg R12), into Australia as either bulk gas or contained in equipment, or equipment that can only operate on CFCs.
If you are intending to bring a vehicle or goods to Australia you should ensure that the air-conditioning or refrigeration system does not contain or operate on a CFC (R12) refrigerant.
